In the idyllic town of Jevnaker, Norway, lies a cultural treasure trove that beckons to travelers seeking a harmonious blend of artistry, historical significance, and architectural ingenuity. Kistefos Museum is not just a destination; it's a multi-faceted experience that promises to immerse visitors in a world of world-class architecture, industrial heritage, thought-provoking art exhibitions, and a mesmerizing sculpture park that seamlessly integrates with its stunning natural surroundings.

A Tapestry of Past and Present

Kistefos Museum's history is firmly rooted in the annals of industry. Its origins trace back over 130 years to 1889 when Consul Anders Sveaas founded A/S Kistefos Træsliberi, a wood pulp mill that played a pivotal role in the local industrial landscape until its cessation in 1955. Rather than fading into obscurity, the mill's legacy was meticulously preserved and revitalized, transforming it into the cultural haven we know today, thanks to the vision of Christen Sveaas, the grandson of its founder.

In the heart of this historical site, the Industrial Museum offers a window into the past, showcasing the machinery and buildings that once powered the mill. The serene river Randselva, which meanders through the entire area, serves as both a symbol of the industrial heritage and a tranquil backdrop to this vibrant cultural oasis.

The Architectural Marvel: The Twist

One of the most captivating features of Kistefos is undoubtedly "The Twist," a 1000-square-meter architectural marvel that defies convention. Designed by the internationally acclaimed Danish architectural firm BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group, The Twist is both a gallery and a bridge, with a remarkable twist, quite literally, as it spans across the Randselva river. Its design has earned it a place in the spotlight, being celebrated as a "must-see cultural destination" by esteemed publications such as the New York Times, Bloomberg, and The Telegraph.

Inside The Twist, visitors embark on a visual and spatial journey through three distinctive galleries: the Closed Gallery, Twist Gallery, and Panorama Gallery. What may appear as a structure with gracefully curved lines is, in fact, an optical illusion masterfully crafted from straight lines of aluminum and wood panels. The Panorama Gallery offers panoramic vistas of the river and the surrounding landscape, forging a profound connection between art and nature.

Descending to the lower level via a transparent staircase, guests find themselves in close proximity to the river, immersing themselves in the heart of nature while delving into the museum's exhibits. Even the restrooms are adorned with artwork by Tony Oursler, underscoring the commitment to artistic detail that defines Kistefos.

For art enthusiasts, Kistefos is a veritable sanctuary of creativity. The museum boasts two galleries: The Twist and Nybruket Gallery, each hosting dynamic art exhibitions that feature a diverse array of national and international artists. Nybruket Gallery, nestled within one of the historic factory buildings, provides a captivating juxtaposition of industrial heritage and contemporary artistic expression.

Yet, it is the sculpture park that truly sets Kistefos apart. Adorned with 52 sculptures by acclaimed contemporary artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Claes Oldenburg, Olafur Eliasson, Anish Kapoor, and many more, the park transforms into an open-air art gallery that evolves with the changing seasons. Numerous sculptures are site-specific, deeply inspired by Kistefos' rich history, culture, and breathtaking natural surroundings. Even during the off-season, these sculptures continue to metamorphose, revealing new facets of their character and enhancing the serene ambiance of the park.
